Observatory | The most recent acquisition in tyhe observatory is a LHIRES III Littrow-type spectrograph from Shelyak Instruments. Being a former atomic spectroscopist, I just couldn't resist. The detector in use is a StarLight Xpress SXV-H9 CCD camera, my former imaging CCD. I started of with 2400 l/mm grating for high-resolution work but plan to get a 1200l/mm for more light and also 150 l/mm grating for faint objects.
Lhires III spectrograph A further ambition is to use a StarLight Xpress SXV as guider. There are many fun projects described on the Shelyak home page, ranging from planet rotanion speed to studies of carbon stars. An additional idea is to estimate solar magnetic field strengths by looking at Zeeman splitting across a sunspot. I don't know if any amateur has done that or if it is possible at all with amateur equipment. |
